A Grateful Dead Tribute serving MD, DC, VA, WV and Furthur since 2002... Come join the party
David Jacobson has been a fixture on the Baltimore music scene for the last 40 years. Beginning with his first band Freewater, he quickly gained notoriety. David was one of the first to explore the improvisational style of rock and roll emanating from bands in the San Francisco bay area. In 1979 he was voted Best Local Guitarist in the Unicorn Times Critic’s Poll and it was reported that he “plays more like Garcia than Garcia has in years”. At their height, Freewater was touring 28 nights a month playing club and concert dates. Since that time David has continued his career. He has shared the stage with many national acts and just recently was the opening act for two of San Francisco’s finest, David Nelson of The New Riders Of The Purple Sage and mandolin virtuoso David Grisman.
After attending The Community College of Baltimore and Towson State University as a music major, David was introduced to Professor Asher Zlotnik. Dr. Zlotnik was a retired Peabody Institute music instructor who took on selected students for private lessons. David studied with Dr. Zlotnik for three years, but his schedule on the road forced him to discontinue.
David later went on to broaden his musical horizons and accepted the position as Music Director for Harbor Cruises dinner cruise ships “Lady Baltimore” and “Lady Christina”. He managed four bands and one hundred singing waiters and waitresses. His influence in this endeavor got Harbor Cruises off to a flying start. But David’s love of improvised rock and roll always brought him back to the sound he started with.
David Jacobson will always be known for his heavily influenced Jerry Garcia style of melodic soloing and fluid rhythmic structure. He continues to perform in the Baltimore/Washington area, and maintains a successful teaching practice.
